preen creators Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi, for the last few years, have left a trail of gloriously floaty, wafty, sheer, ultra-feminine creations in their wake.
Their SS19 collection, however, showed glimpses of a return to a tougher preen woman, the likes of which we've not seen since about preen circa 2015.

This time last year, the Spring/Summer '18 collection hit peak whimsy, with the most beautiful, sheer and barely there silk-chiffons draped impossibly lightly over delicate bodies, the fabrics rippling with a movement like water as they wafted down the runway.
A year on though, the glimmering sylphs of SS18 have given way to a slightly hardier woman - the sort that looks like she might not evaporate under harsh conditions.

The mood at Spring Summer 2019's preen show was full of the thrill of adventure. With a show set consisting of billowing parachute hangings, the models marched around and under them, clad in stompy walking sandals and hiking boots.

To be sure, the hiking boots had plaid ribbon for laces and the walking sandals were all paired with frilly, fold-over socks, but the intention for pacing through real-world terrain was there.

The ruffles, sheer lace panels, puff sleeves and shirring were pushed to high voltage, but even the styling - hair that was supposed to look like it had sweated under a beanie for a few days, according to stylist Eugene Souleiman - spoke of running up hills and generally being a real life, out in the wild, human.

It was a fun juxtaposition and it echoes the Molly Goddard re-appropriation of the term 'real woman,' meaning someone who actually lives, who has attitude, who thrives on adventure and thrills and drinks and dances and hikes up hills with the rest of us. And if she wants to do it in a staggeringly beautiful couture dress? So, let her.
